A Family Affair

After her optometrist noticed something off during a routine eye test, my sister-in-law, Amanda (pictured above to the right, Rachel and I to the left), was referred to a specialist who diagnosed her with Stargardt’s Disease, a condition affecting 1:20,000 people with no cure. It was a devastating time, to say the least.

Complaint Corner: Chick-fil-A Needs Some Tie-Ins!

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Sponge Guy! (6-7 pm only)

I knew Chick-fil-A was a hotbed of chicken-related cuisine, but I didn’t know they were also hosts of family-friendly, live entertainment!

Taped up on the doors of the Avon, Indiana, location a few months back was a schedule of live events to be hosted at the location. It heavily advertised for “Magic with Daniel,” but also featured a prominent picture of SpongeBob SquarePants Sponge Guy! Wha?!

Not the Only Generic Children’s Character to Grace the Avon Chick-fil-A

Featured months earlier at the same location was Elmo “Everyone’s Favorite Red Furry Monster,” another rip-off of Sesame Street’s most popular character. The two characters just happen to share the same red, furry and monster-like traits.

Unlike “Sponge Guy,” who looks exactly like SpongeBob SquarePants, “Everyone’s Favorite Red Furry Monster” was hilariously dissimilar and crappy in comparison to Elmo. I took a picture of this monster with my old phone, but unfortunately can’t locate a copy. I believe my pal Chris took a shot, though. Stay tuned, as I’ll post the photographic gem immediately if/once obtained!

“Perpendicular Mop Critter” or “Right-Angled Absorbent Trousers”

I can see getting away with “Everyone’s Red Furry Monster,” but “Sponge Guy” appears to be too blatant of a copycat to not get Chick-fil-A in legal trouble with Viacom/Nickelodeon. The likeness is too good, and there is the word “sponge” still in the name. I would have suggested names like ones mentioned above, and would have likely ditched the two big teeth and tie, as well. It looks exactly the same, c’mon!

Sic ‘em, boys!

Please, Chick-fil-A, pony up the cash for a corporate tie-in or two!

Complaint Corner: Chick-fil-A Needs Some Tie-Ins, Part II

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Behold the Wonder!

Chris from Hadley’s Happenings has pulled through with the priceless shot to the right.

Gaze into the lifeless stare of “Everyone’s Favorite Furry Red Monster” (I mistakenly called it “Everyone’s Favorite Red Furry Monster” yesterday, forgive me), a crappy Elmo knockoff with uncomfortably dilated eyes and a wide, sheepish grin.

Do you trust this creature to entertain and/or hug your innocent children while you relax, eating your chicken sandwich? I know I wouldn’t.

Really, this monster looks like the love child of two Sesame Street Monsters: Telly and Elmo. Disturbing.

Make sure to check the infringing entertainment your local Chick-fil-A has to offer!

New Jim Carrey Movie (”Yes Man”) Rip-Off of Old Jim Carrey Movie (”Liar Liar”). Advice to Jim: “Pull a John C. Reilly”

1994: Jim Carrey Was My Idol

In case you don't know what Jim Carrey looks like.

As a kid growing up in the early-90’s I idolized Jim Carrey. You couldn’t beat “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” (1994), “Dumb and Dumber” (1994) and “The Mask” (1994). Especially “Dumb and Dumber,” which is easily my favorite comedy (narrowly beating out Steve Martin’s “The Jerk” [1979]). Okay, I’ll admit it. “Dumber and Dumber” just may be my favorite movie overall. I’m a sucker for comedies, and it’s writing, acting and humor are flawless.

Mainstream Success, Generic Movies (and a complaint about Matthew Broderick)

Then Jim Carrey made “The Cable Guy” (1996), beginning a long string of mostly generic movies before becoming overly serious/growing his hair out.

What Happened to NERF Footballs?

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

A Trip to Target

Whilst at Target last week I was going about my business, doing what most men in their mid-twenties do: I paid a visit to the toy aisle to see the latest offerings from NERF. What I saw was quite discouraging.

Where’s the Classic NERF?

There wasn’t a classic foam NERF football to be seen. You know what I’m talking about. That dirty football that was always in the baby-sitter’s backyard, a corner bit off by the neighborhood dog, soaked and puffy from being rained on fifty times.

Don’t remember what I’m talking about? Check out this classic NERF commerical:

Rubbing Elbows With Colts WR Marvin Harrison

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Upon leaving a Colts sponsor luncheon today I noticed some players hanging around an “Indy 500″ sports car, parked a row behind my car.

One of the guys was none other than Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison! I snapped a picture quick before taking off.

Okay, so I don’t think he saw me, or knows I exist, but I’ll still claim to have “rubbed elbows” with the future Hall of Famer!

Note: This photo was taken from the back window of my superior 06 Nissan Sentra.

Spreading the Word about “Customary Creatures”

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I’m making an honest effort to advertise and spread the good word about Customary Creatures!

The comic has been added to the listings at The New Belfry WebComics Index, The WebComic Index and Top Web Comics Comic Rankings. Feel free write a review, or simply vote Creatures daily @ Top Web Comics and buzzcomix via the links below!

Vote for this comic!

I paid for a “featured comic” spot at The WebComic Index. This means the Customary Creatures avatar is placed on the “Featured Comics” page, and will occasionally show up on the top ad bar.

Additionally, I used the Project Wonderful service to place ad bids at New Belfry, Multiplex by Gordon McAlpin, Left Handed Toons, and Garfield Minus Garfield.:

Click “ShareThis” below to share Customary Creatures with your friends, family and pets. Thanks for all your support!
